Legacy CRT migration to LCD Technology; VarTech Systems’ RETROFIT Program

Although the LCD market has superseded Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) technology, there are still a large number of processes and applications that utilize CRTs as the main means of display and communication between the operator of machinery and the process. But CRTs are extremely heavy, occupy large volumes and consume relatively large amounts of electricity. Additionally, original CRT manufacturers have migrated production to current technology LCDs. So, locating available usable CRTs has proved to be very difficult if not impossible.

With many industrial/medical/military applications, these CRT monitors are embedded in the equipment they supervise and/or control which makes upgrade difficult and sometimes impossible. Their unique shape, screen size, mechanical format and communication interface can be vastly different than current LCD technology models. More often than not, substantial modifications to the customer’s host equipment are needed which can be costly, inefficient or even impossible. Another distinct problem lies in communication between the much older host equipment and the new LCD display. Typically, current LCD communication protocol will not interface with the host equipment which might be 10-30 years old.

Companies utilizing CRT-based operator stations be that from the CNC machines, Numeric Control Machines, Medical equipment, PLC or DCS based operator stations/panels now have access to a better, more cost effective alternative. By special development of our own Signal Recognition and Scaling software, and access to an extensive library of older signal timings gained from 25 plus years of CRT monitor manufacturing, VarTech has created Multiscan “Universal” LCD technology with unique 15kHz to 64kHz display capabilities. We have the unique ability to “Retrofit” all new VarTech electronics as well as a new Flat Panel LCD into your existing chassis. This eliminates any concerns regarding mounting into your operator equipment and as well provides reliable communication between the new LCD and your older video format.

VarTech can retrofit most models including:
A & Y, ABB, ACGC, ALLEN-BRADLEY, ANILAM, ASCHENBRENNER, BALL, Beaver, Boley, Boko, BOSCH, Bridgeport, BROTHER, CABEL, Cardinal, Chiron, CHOMUSEN, CINCINNATI. Understanding The Application

Your company has a new project slated for the next quarter, year, or just on the drawing board and you have been asked to find suitable products for the upcoming project. A couple of the items needed are touch screen monitors and industrial computers. After numerous hours, or even days of searching through trade journals, catalogs, and of course the Internet, you have found a couple of industrial LCD monitor and touch computer manufacturers that you want to get information and pricing from.

What’s next? You did it! You clicked the request for quote or contact us for more info button. Now what happens? Do you get an email explaining all the features and benefits to the product you selected and how it will magically make all of your problems disappear forever? No, you typically wait, and wait. Until finally you get an email with a price and brochure.  Is the correspondence in a language you understand? Hard to tell nowadays with most LCD/computer companies building their products overseas.

Okay, so this might not be the case all the time, but the real question is; did you get what you were looking for? Does the website and/or person representing it know and understand your application? There are a lot of variables that affect the design and performance of systems and being able to communicate with potential vendors about these is pertinent in specifying the correct equipment. Take a look at the following examples to see the importance of communicating with a company that understands your application.

Example 1: Upgrading Honeywell Consoles (LCD or CRT)

Although this seems like a very cut and dry upgrade these process control systems are not simple plug and play units. Beyond the mechanical fit and finish there are special graphics cards that are unique to these systems and dropping in a display from your local electronics store just doesn’t work. It is important to work with a company like VarTech Systems that is familiar with these units and can guide you in your decision to upgrade.

Example 2: Ethylene Cracking Unit Benzene Analyzer

In your facility it has been recommended that a benzene analyzer for the ethylene distillation process be put in place in the production area. Normally this type of analytical information is reviewed in the control room but as a safeguard there needs to be visual data onsite as well. You have all the equipment necessary to capture and analyze the data but now the operators need to review and ensure the levels are where they need to be. Obviously you don’t install a desktop computer out here so what do you place in this environment? You will need a hazardous area approved LCD or Touchscreen PC. This is a bit different than changing out a monitor in a controlled environment as there is a serious safety concern here. By contacting a company like VarTech Systems the personnel will gather the necessary information about your site and installation to ensure the proper equipment is quoted. This will ensure that your company is not searching for these type of monitors/computers and uncertain as to whether or not it will even be approved for use in this project.

As you can see by these two examples that when selecting industrial LCD monitors, touch screens computers, workstations, or even upgrading the old CRT monitors it is imperative that you and your company communicate with a company that understands the application. Please call VarTech Systems at 800.223.8050 to discuss your next project.

IP67 LCD, but why the alligator?

VarTech All-Weather All-Terrain LCD Monitor

VarTech Systems has been promoting the IP67 All-Weather All-Terrain Rugged LCD monitors for the past few years with an alligator as the “mascot”. On more than one occasion I have been asked the semblance of alligator and how it pertains to LCD displays. I would like to let everyone know why we use this creature as the “mascot” for VarTech’s flagship product.

  • The alligator is known as a “Living Fossil”, having survived hundreds of millions of years on earth. This survivability relates to VarTech’s commitment for a long life product line. Although we don’t guarantee 200 million years, the XA series of products also come with a 2 year standard warranty and are designed to last many years beyond that.
  • The American Alligator is capable of both land and water living. This aquatic habitat requires that the gators be submersed under water sometimes for several hours. The IP67 rating of the VarTech All-Weather monitors allows the monitors be submersed in up to 1 meter of water as well.
  • The gators thick skin and protected eyes allows the animal to be protected against virtually all the elements. The same goes for the XA monitors; these displays are encased in a rugged T6 6061 aluminum enclosure and powder coated for extra protection. The protective front overlay helps prevent any damage to the LCD module.
  • Another unique feature of the alligator is its ability to sit in the sun for hours on end.  This brings me to a very important aspect of the All-Weather monitors and that is the sunlight view ability. The XA series monitors are designed to maintain optimal visual characteristics in the brightest of conditions. In addition to the brightness comes the ability to continue operations with the increased heat load.

I hope this helps explain the reasoning behind our using the alligator as our “mascot”. If not; well, then we just used a cool picture!
